As a web designer, it takes careful consideration to realize and understand that not everybody will access and use the web the same way that I do. As a website owner or operator, you are in a vulnerable position and it is extremely important that you know the difference between browsing and searching.
Directly Accessing a Website
If you know where you want to go, just type the url into the address bar. This sounds simple, but many people don't really know what or where to find the address bar. Don't be embarrassed, you are not alone!
The address bar is the very tip top input box within your web browser window. It is not part of any web page, but an element of the web browser itself.
You Must Access Financial Websites Directly
If you are going to Paypal, Bank of America, or any other financial website, it is very important that you ONLY DO SO by direct navigation.
Don't let the bad guys win. If you have any questions about this article please ask.
The correct way to access a financial website will be directly through the address bar as shown in this image.
The Wrong way to access a financial website would be a search as in the image below
If you have Google, Aol, Yahoo, or MSN set as your home page you may be in the habit of running a search for everything. This allows the search engine to be in control of your experience.
DO NOT SEARCH FOR A FINANCIAL WEBSITE
Searching may yield phishing or malicious websites that look and feel like the real thing. The only way to be sure that you are going to the actual site, is to type the EXACT address into the address bar of the browser.
How do you know if you did the wrong thing?
If you type in a web address like www.paypal.com and multiple option are presented on your screen then you made a mistake or typed the address into the wrong box.
What should happen if you do things properly?
When you type the correct address into the ADDRESS BAR and hit enter the webpage will begin to load on your screen. You will not be presented with multiple choices.
